7/01/10: Max Murphy Wins the Elwyn Bugge Fencing Award
Above, Max Murphy 'flunges' at the 2009-2010 NCAAs July 1st, 2010--The Stanford University Varsity Fencing Team named rising senior Max Murphy the first recipient of the resurrected Elwyn Bugge Fencing Award. The award is given to a fencer that demonstrates leadership and compassion and makes significant contributions to the success and well being of the team. Created in 1965, the award has been reestablished in an effort to recognize the accomplished individuals of Cardinal Fencing. The award honors the late Elwyn Bugge who served as an administrator, tennis coach, fencing coach and teacher of sports administrative practice at Stanford University, his alma mater. Along with contributions to the Stanford athletic community, Bugge also served on the NCAA Fencing Rules Committee and the Olympic Fencing Committee. Max is a rising senior majoring in biology with a focus in molecular biology. His favorite classes have been Cellular Dynamics, Motility and Adhesion and Linear Algebra and Differential Equations. From Overland Park, Kansas, Max has trained with The Kansas City Fencing Center and the Fencing Athletic Club of Kansas City and has been fencing since the age of 10. He has an impressive national and international resume, including numerous top 8 and top 16 finishes. On the farm, he has contributed by placing second at the 2008 Western Regional Championships, first at the 2010 Western Regional Championships and qualifying for NCAA championships each of his three seasons. Max served as captain for the 2009-2010 season and will return as senior captain next year. The Cardinal celebrates Max's accomplishments, work ethic and leadership qualities by honoring him with this award. --Eva Jellison |
